Huge win for Lakers over Kodiaks on Sunday evening

McDonald notches first MSL goal

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers began warming up for the playoffs on Sunday night with a big 16-7 win over the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Cobourg Community Centre. Sixteen goals and 67 shots made it their biggest offensive output of the season.

“Once playoffs roll around we want to be playing our best lacrosse,” said head coach Mike Hasen. “The power play was cooking tonight; the short man was really good. [Drew Hutchison] was good tonight, too. We’re getting there. We have a couple more games against Brooklin and then a series against Brooklin.”

The Lakers only need to win one of their last two games to secure second place in Major Series Lacrosse and home-floor advantage in the first round. Should Brooklin win both of those games, second place would come down to goal differential, which currently favours Peterborough +10.

“It’s going to get heated,” said Blake McDonald. “We had a good battle with them last year. The next two games will set the tone for the following four to seven games after that. It’ll be playoff lacrosse right away.”

McDonald scored his first MSL goal on Sunday night, finishing off a two-on-one with Colton Armstrong. At the time, it put the Lakers up 3-0 and was the first of three impactful transition goals scored by the team.

“I saw [Armstrong] flying down the floor; he made a good hustle play,” the second-year defender described. “He was stopped and the ball popped out right in front of me and there just happened to be an open net.”

Armstrong followed up McDonald’s goal 2:15 later, scooping up a rebound of his own and finishing with a dive across the crease, chasing Kodiaks’ starter Jackson Brown in favour of Laine Hruska. Armstrong added breakaway goals in the second and third periods for a hat trick.

“[Transition is] something that we’ve been trying to get going a little more, to be a little more cognizant about our back end pushing the pace a little bit,” Hasen said. “It was great to see those guys get rewarded, especially Blake getting his first with us.”

McDonald said his teammates were more excited than he was.

“I couldn’t help but laugh; it’s been awhile!” he said. “I’ll take it when I can get it.”

A goal in the third period was announced at the time as being scored by McDonald, but he quickly set the record straight with a chuckle: “That’s Holden [Cattoni]! He made a good shot. That’s not my game.”

Armstrong has only played a few games with McDonald but recognizes how valuable a defender he is becoming.

"He’s a big guy and he talks a lot on the floor so it’s nice to play with another guy like that," Armstrong said. "The whole defence plays and talks. Obviously we play on different teams in the NLL but it’s nice that we can all bring our different games together here."

Cattoni sniped a shot top corner to put the Lakers up 5-1. Eli McLaughlin scored a power play goal to close out the first period with the Lakers up 6-2.

Peterborough outscored Cobourg 6-3 in the second. Taite Cattoni went with a low inside shot before Eli McLaughlin dodged a defender to get inside. Turner Evans picked up a rebound and passed the ball through his legs to Thomas Hoggarth who spun around and scored with one hand. In addition to his goal, Hoggarth contributed seven assists.

Armstrong then kicked off a three-goal run with goals coming from Turner Evans and Taite Cattoni who each made vertical leaps to put the ball home.

Armstrong agreed that Sunday's game was the most fun he's had in a Lakers uniform so far. The fact that he picked up a hat trick against his old team wasn't lost on him.

"It was different coming back to the arena and being on the other side, but yeah it was pretty cool to get three goals," he said. "My family and my fiancée were here. Usually they sit on the Cobourg side so this time they sat behind the Lakers bench so it was nice to look up and see them all happy and proud of me."

The Lakers continued their domination in the third with four goals in a row. Holden Cattoni potted back-to-back power play goals. D.J. Clark scored his second of the game after Armstrong’s hat trick goal, fooling Hruska with a desperation shot with one second left on the shot clock.

NOTES: With the Brampton Excelsiors’ 15-9 loss to Brooklin on Sunday night, the Kodiaks have clinched fourth place and will face the Six Nations Chiefs in the first round. Chad Tutton missed Sunday’s game after his wife Christina gave birth to their first child, a daughter named McKenzie Mae, on Friday night.

The Century 21 Lakers back end is ready for the 2026 season. Over the last week, the team announced a number of veteran defenders returning for another run at the Mann Cup national championship. Foremost among the returnees is captain Robert Hope, the 14-year Sr. Laker stalwart. A Peterborough native and Jr. A Laker graduate, Hope was named captain in 2017 and has led the team to four Mann Cup championships. He is joined by fellow Peterborough natives Dustyn Birkhof and Dylan Hutchison. Assistant captain Matt Gilray also returns for his 10 th season. Sophomore Chris Harland is expected to play a bigger role this season for the Lakers after honing his skills with the Arena Lacrosse League’s Toronto Monarchs. Newcomer Brenden Boyle, drafted by the Lakers in 2024, has committed to the team for the season after playing in Nanaimo for the last two summers. All three Lakers’ goaltenders are back. Nick Rose and Drew Hutchison will join the team when the NLL season concludes. The two are set to face off against each other in the NLL Cup championship, which begins tonight in Hamilton with Rose’s Toronto Rock taking on Hutchison’s Halifax Thunderbirds in a best-of-three series. Deacan Knott will hold down the fort until they return. The Lakers will continue to announce more player signings in the coming days. The Century 21 Lakers are happy to announce the return of righty forward Rob Hellyer for their 2026 Mann Cup hunt. The 5’9, 180 lb. Hellyer was originally acquired from the Oakville Rock in 2024 in exchange for defenders Thomas Whitty and Matt Wright. The native of Lion’s Head, Ontario, had 44 points across nine games in the regular season plus another 42 playoff points to finish second in team scoring. Hellyer signed with the San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League in time for the 2024-25 season and moved with his wife to San Diego, so was unavailable to the Lakers last summer. After a trade to Ottawa prior to the 2025-26 season, Hellyer and his family returned home to Ontario. The 33-year-old had an excellent season in Ottawa, finishing second in team scoring and 12 th overall in the league with 32 goals and 67 assists for 99 points. His passing skills were a key component in Jeff Teat’s season-long stranglehold on the top of the scoring chart. Also returning to the Lakers’ right side is Braedon Saris , fresh off his rookie season with the Colorado Mammoth, where he finished fourth in team scoring with 16 goals and 37 assists. Saris was acquired by the Lakers from the Cobourg Kodiaks last summer in exchange for Tommy Collins and a third-round draft pick. Saris proved to be a key power play quarterback for the Lakers and finished the regular season with 29 points and the playoffs with 31 points. Since 2004, Alf Curtis Home Improvements has proudly stood behind the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers — and what a journey it’s been. That first year of partnership couldn’t have been more fitting. In 2004, the Lakers ended a 20-year drought by capturing the legendary Mann Cup , reigniting a championship tradition in Peterborough. Over the past 21 years, Alf Curtis Home Improvements hasn’t just been a sponsor — they’ve been part of the Lakers family. “When you think about the modern era of Lakers lacrosse, Alf Curtis has been there from the very beginning,” said Pete Dalliday with the Lakers. “Their support helped lay the foundation for everything this organization has become.” Through packed nights at the Memorial Centre and deep playoff runs, their support has helped fuel one of the most successful eras in franchise history, including multiple Mann Cup championships. This season carries added meaning. Founder Alf Curtis passed away last fall, not long after the Lakers season came to a close. His legacy, generosity and passion for the community will not be forgotten. His wife, June Curtis , continues to be part of that legacy, with the Curtis family’s connection to the team as strong as ever. "Alf wasn’t just a sponsor — he truly cared about this team and this community,” added Dalliday. Recently, members of the Lakers family stopped by the Alf Curtis Home Improvements flagship store in Peterborough — a reflection of the strong bond between team and partner. Holden Lowes , who is hoping to return to the lineup this season after suffering a season-ending injury in training camp last year, was joined by board member Bill Joiner , along with Brent Perry and Chase Curtis , grandchildren of Alf and June. “It was great to be back in the store and see that connection is still so strong,” said Dalliday. “That’s what makes partnerships like this so special — it’s real, it’s lasting, and it means something.” Great teams are built on talent, dedication, and community support. For more than two decades, Alf Curtis Home Improvements has delivered all three. Here’s to 21 years of partnership — and honouring a legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come.
